Understanding the Nuisance

In Bloomington, Indiana and throughout the Midwest, Asian lady beetles (Harmonia axyridis) are incredibly common, especially as the weather cools. They were originally released to control aphids, but they now pose a nuisance for homeowners.

In the autumn, these beetles gather in massive numbers on sunny, south-facing walls of buildings, seeking crevices to overwinter. Once inside, they do not damage structures, but they can emit a foul-smelling yellow liquid that stains surfaces when disturbed.

Their presence is harmless to humans beyond occasional bites, yet their numbers and indoor swarming make fall visits frustrating. Homeowners often seek pest control help during this season.
